Bavarian Bier Cafe (Chatswood)

The biggest and busiest entrant on Eat Street is a large and airy venue, ideal for Sydney’s al fresco summer. When in Bavaria, one should drink beer… because if you drink schnapps, the whole restaurant is subjected to an infernal cowbell. With my feminist hat on, I eschewed the flavoured ‘Ladies Beer’ in favour of a 5 Pure Bier Flight ($19.50). Löwenbräu Original lager was a refreshing quaffer; though the Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel wheat beer intrigued with toffee and banana lolly notes. As I was seated by the pass, I was able to watch just five chefs working the long narrow kitchen to feed 240 diners in the full restaurant. Our entrees were slow to arrive, but it did give me plenty of time to ogle the mains heading out – resulting in serious Crackling Roast Pork Belly ($28.50) envy. Lucky when my Bavarian Antipasto Platter ($19.50) did arrive, it was laden with high quality cured and smoked meats, creamy potato slices, rye bread, a smoked cheese dip, tart pickles and even decent salt for the pork! The Forest Mushroom and Sauteed Garlic Flammenbrot ($16.50) is Bavaria’s answer to pizza – excellent pastry; tasty ‘shrooms; ripper drinking food. Throw in a flavoursome Pretzel ($3.50) and my stomach was well-lined…
