BE PART OF THE SYDNEY FRINGE FESTIVAL

Recently I attended a talk at which an artist went to great lengths to describe the idea of, “cultural fringe.” We’re not at the bottom of the heap, feeding off the plankton, she said. We’re pumping ideas into the mainstream and vice versa. This is an idea echoed on the Sydney Fringe Festival website, where a testimonial posted from cult comic creator Alan Moore says, “Ideas enter our above ground culture through the underground … That is where the dreams of our culture can ferment …” Nonetheless Sydney has traditionally been viewed as top-heavy, the ‘above ground’ running the show and getting all the press. But with restrictive liquor licensing laws recently thrown out the window along with nonsensical entertainment constraints, the time is ripe for a cultural fringe revolution. Enter, the Sydney Fringe Festival which will take place in the inner west in September 2010. And they want your input into what shape and form that fringe will take, whether in form of feedback or actual involvement as an artist, musician, actor, whatever. This is your chance to get to the top of the foodchain. Go to thesydneyfringe.com.au for more information.
