BILL CALLAHAN – APOCALYPSE

Bill Callahan has been releasing his self written and recorded work for about 20 years. Prior to 2007 he recorded under the name Smog. In the early 90s Callahan’s modus operandi was quirky and odd de-tuned instrumentals with repetitive themes in melody. As he has matured so has his music. His lyrical style is  understated, but clear. It has similarities to “The Man in Black” Johnny Cash and probably more like New York icon and legend Lou Reed.  It could be described as sing-talking. It fits the musical style of this album. While there are only 7 tracks here, each song tells a story, and as they  unfolds as you hang on every lyric. The two clear standout tracks in a good batch are the soulful and reflective Baby’s Breath and the grittier and more rhythmic America!. The latter is a really cool open highway driving song. You can’t grow tired of it. This is a class release from the veteran Bill Callahan, and sits with his best work to date.
