Blue Orange

Back when small bars were just small and shared tables were just compact, there was Blue Orange. Classic and understated but colourful – the cocktail menu reflects this too. I went for an Apple Mojito ($13.50), fresh tasting and cloudy (like a water colour painting); and the specialty of the house, a Berri Lychee Martini ($13.50) that would make most girls melt (like a Dalí painting). The Harissa Grilled Prawn Salad ($15.50) has everything I want in a salad – spice, crunch, cous cous and coconut-covered prawns – which are to die for. Likewise, their Grilled Haloumi ($13.50) is very pleasing, not over-salted or oiled. The Crispy Skinned Salmon ($26.50) lives up to its promise, passing the tap-tap test on the skin. With a pea puree and a light lemon salad cream it’s not overpowered or too decadent. I’ve been eating a lot of steak recently and their 250g Sirloin ($35) fits the bill, together with porcini butter it melts in your mouth – with the red wine jus as the ‘icing’ on the steak. I can never decide between dessert and cheese, so the Ricotta Panna Cotta ($9.50) with espresso caramel sauce is the perfect synergy, ticking all of my boxes. Unlike most small bars – prices and service here are exceptional.
