Bonsai Japanese Restaurant

One of the true joys of winter is being able to park close to the popular restaurant row at Bronte Beach; in fact during my recent lunch time visit I had my choice of parking spaces. Equally pleasant is warming up in the sun at an al fresco table with a great view across beautiful coastline at this contemporary little Japanese suburban gem. First thing on my agenda was a steaming bowl of Miso Soup ($4.00), which was pleasing to the stomach and my cold hands. The beautiful presentation and knife work on our Assorted Sashimi Deluxe ($31/ 20 pieces) attested to the skill of sushi chef Hidetoshi Tsuboi. The seared salmon, scattered with sesame seeds, was a particular delight. Our Soft Shell Crab ‘Spider’ Roll ($18) was also a feast for the eyes with artful arrangement, and well balanced flavours to boot. Perhaps one of the biggest selling points of this space comes for couples where one is Japanese crazy (like myself), and one is not ‘ when you dine here, you can mix and match with dishes from the neighbouring modern Australian Swell Restaurant. This partnership also meant I was able to enjoy a spicy Bloody Mary ($14) with my late lunch! Bonsai is open for both lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday.
