Pop and porn; guns and the global financial crisis; songs, saucy outfits and Swiss translation: Snatch Paradise is shimmying briefly onto Sydney shores.
In town for just three performances for its English-language premier, this black comedy musical from renowned theatre renegades, the Gemeinschaft Dogs Company, will spice up the Fraser Studios in Chippendale from Saturday through to Monday. Snatch Paradise was originally commissioned for the Bern Stadttheater in Switzerland, and is about to be spirited back out again for a month-long run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival’s Underbelly venue in August.
Written by the fabled Van Badham and directed by long-term collaborator Tanya Denny, it features original music by Anneliese Szota and film and video contributions from Raen Fraser. This ‘drag-o-riffic’ display also showcases the talents of all-rounders Lucy Miller, Sophie Cook, Shannon Dooley, Annaliese Szota and Geraldine Timmins.
Promoted as an adults-only affair, the burlesque gala show on Saturday night is of particular note. It features magicians, hula-hoopers, a performance by Mistress Arcadia and most intriguingly, vampire cabaret, with nary a bestselling Mormon author in sight. All funds raised go to covering tour costs, so it’s a chance to combine your two great loves: hedonism and helping indie theatre.
18–20 July, Studio 14, Fraser Studios, 10-14 Kensington St, Chippendale, $20-50, 9789 0539
