Italian owner/chef Massimo Arata laughingly says: “Sometimes I see people in the street and I say skinny latte, how are you? I know them more by their coffee than their name.” His memory and warmth are certainly part of the attraction of this small but stylish four-year old Pyrmont cafe – it’s nice to be remembered, and my Grinders Flat White ($3) is right on the money. While the bulk of their business is serving as a canteen for busy neighbour Fox Sports, at weekends they turn into a great breakfast nook for savvy locals. One bite of my Sweet Corn Fritters ($11.50) with bacon, sour cream and a fragrant ginger-rich chilli relish, and I was exclaiming: “Now that’s what I’m talking about!” Max cooks the fluffiest corn fritters in Sydney using fresh corn, and that relish is to die for! Three super fresh eggs crown his equally good Ova Espagnola ($10.50), a baked egg dish with a gentle chorizo, crispy potato, tomato and rocket. Produce is stellar across the board, with a nod to seasonality in a good Orange and Peach Frappe ($5.50). When Max assured me his Hollandaise is made fresh with each order, I marked his Eggs Benedict ($11) into my diary. Did you notice those prices?
