Last week I joined a select group of people from Richard Nixon to Jackie Chan, who have been afforded the opportunity to drink Moutai. While their experiences probably came at Chinese feasts with foreign heads of state or distinguished guests, mine was at the launch of Kweichou Moutai.
Food News – Chop Shop Carnivorium
Melinda Dimitriades has renamed and relocated her popular Redfern (Farmgate) butchery into an old butcher’s shop in Hurlstone Park, close to the area she grew up in. Keeping the traditional butcher’s awnings, Chop Shop Carnivorium has been warmly embraced by the locals, including a Greek lady who Melinda tells me has “been coming since the original (Greek) owners ran it thirty years ago.”

Food News – Rabbit Hole
I’d like to give a big birthday shout-out to the Rabbit Hole Bar & Dining crew, who celebrated their first year of operation by throwing a great shindig last week. Surrounded by a crew of media, loyal customers, food industry folk - including bloggers like Simon Food Favourites and Porkstar ambassador Mitch Edwards – plus celebrities like Nacho Pop, I attended with my friend Joanna in tow.
Sydney's 2014 Chinese New Year Festival, running from the 24th January to the 9th February, is set to be the biggest in our 18-year history, with over 80 events scheduled. Fashion designer Claudia Chan Shaw, one of the City of Sydney’s festival ambassadors, says: “For us, Chinese New Year has always been about getting together and sharing wonderful food with family and friends.”
