Chocolate Dog

There’s something quite likable about this small Newtown venue that is a cafe by day, and serves up Mexican inspired food by night. Sitting outside on the sidewalk as evening falls with a bottle of wine (BYO $3/bottle) and a plate of simple, non-oily Quesadillas Con Jamon ($9.50), you can get lost in a people-watching paradise. Even with the influx of yuppies, there are enough quirky Newtown types and exotic dog breeds wandering by to entertain! After an encountering the Japanese Spitz of my dreams, a sizzling platter of Pork Fajitas ($18.90) arrives with soft flour tortillas, a decent guacamole, salsa, sour cream and an additional side of not-too-scorching Jalapenos ($3.50). The pork’s sweet and sour edge comes from Coca Cola and lime juice; and the dish is brimming with sweet capsicum. The more robust One-Pan Lamb ($20.80) is set against the contrasting relief of tomatoes, Spanish onion and cucumber. Both dishes come with a small mound of tasty Mexican rice, and I’d consider the serves hearty. Staff do amble, but the crude setting and low prices mean it doesn’t grate. It might not be the best or most authentic Mexican in Sydney, but on a lazy evening after paying a very reasonable bill, I leave with a smile.
