DANCE: IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE

Have you ever had the sneaking feeling that Sydney was a creature like you and me, pulsing with life, braced with bones and ever growing? Dancer Martin del Amo certainly has – citing Tom Wolfe’s description of a, “billion-footed beast” – untameable yet observable. His show It’s a Jungle Out There grapples with this idea of metropolitan as organism, using the building blocks of narrative, dance, and electronic sound design. His preparation included perambulating blindfolded along Parramatta Rd, crawling through the Rocks, skipping through the business district and going backwards on George St – each excursion designed to force his body to negotiate the city in a new way. What this will mean when danced remains to be seen – and we hope Sydney is watching.
