Let’s get one thing straight from the get-go. This is an album with strong suits in simplicity, schmaltz and sentiment. If this is anathema to you, stop reading now. If, however, you appreciate the art of a well-constructed tune, David Campbell Sings John Bucchino might well be for you.

A paean to Broadway, this is essentially Campbell on vocals with his longtime idol and friend Bucchino on piano. The result is a beautiful album with numerous high points including the captivating Sweet Dreams, the poignant Unexpressed and the stirring Better Than I.

All in all, a welcome return to Campbell’s Broadway roots. (PH)
