“EnTrance utilises a thrilling mix of art forms and performance styles”, says Performance Space co-director Jeff Khan of the show, which premiers on April 18th as part of the Dimension Crossing season at Carriageworks. The critically acclaimed solo performance by Japanese performer Yumi Umiumare explores the tensions between birth, death, and all that lies in between.
“In terms of the live performance element, Yumi fuses butoh, theatre, contemporary dance, cabaret, and there’s even some karaoke in there too”, Khan continued. “The show also mixes live performance with a stunning array of digital media – think large-scale projections, electronic costumes and an astonishing lighting design. It’s this fusion of live and digital elements that I think is particularly innovative about the work… The two blend so seamlessly, which really takes you away to another world altogether while you’re watching it.”
The digital and art elements of the show are being provided by artists Bambang Nurcahyadi and Naomi Ota. “Bambang has created enormous projected cityscapes that wrap around the theatre and completely envelop Yumi as she performs”, says Kahn.
“Naomi is a visual artist and has created some beautiful set pieces through quite simple materials, like large screens made out of fringing that divide the performance space. They work as a set for Yumi’s performance, but also become a beautiful, ever-shifting surface for Bambang’s projections and the lighting design too.” EnTrance promises to be a pretty incredible sensory experience on all fronts.
