Dog death raises fears of poison reprisal

The suspected poisoning of a dog in Ewenton Park has revived calls for inner west locals to be vigilant about threats to their canine companions.
In early March, a dog died after seemingly falling victim to a similar spate of poisoning which afflicted around a dozen dogs in Mort Bay Park last September.
However, a definitive determination on the cause of death cannot be established, as an autopsy was not carried out after the dog’s death.
Local resident and dog owner Frank Nolan said he was “stunned” by the incident. “As I was entering the park with my dog, a lady came to the end of Grafton Street and called me back to tell me what happened to her friend’s little dog,” he said. “I immediately left the park to go home and prepare two warning signs for either end of the park.”
Independent Leichhardt councillor John Stamolis said it was very important pet owners remained vigilant. “It’s obviously quite alarming – I’ve notified the Water Police there and if any residents see anything, they should obviously contact both Police and Council,” he said.
