EVENT: DAVID HARE’S BERLIN/WALL

Author:

A longstanding symbol of separation, convention, protection and suggested menace, the ‘wall’ forms the foundation for famed playwright David Hare’s two vignettes, to be read by Hare himself in a special one-off fundraiser at Belvoir. Berlin celebrates the 20 year falling of that emblematic barrier, tapping into the elusive character of the city itself. Wall grapples with the 782km length of ‘security’ fencing to one day separate Israel and Palestine – a physical testament to a deep-rooted divide already very much in existence. In both, Hare tends to delicately ‘sit on the fence’; giving a subtle, seeing-eye view in each direction. This is a rare opportunity to witness the creative force behind Gethesmane (recently staged in the Upstairs Theatre), The Blue Room and The Hours adaptation amongst others, ruminating on a topic that is relevant to all.

Mon Oct 12, 8pm, Belvoir Upstairs Theatre, 18 Belvoir St, Surry Hills, $56-100 (fundraiser), 9699 3444 or belvoir.com.au
