Sustainability wriggles into Town Hall

It may get a little crowded at Town Hall House as Sydney City Council staff will soon have to share their work space with 70,000 slippery characters.
The City has just purchased a commercial-sized worm farm, measuring 6m2, that it hopes to install at its council offices as part of a range of in-house environmental initiatives.
The move accompanies a number of other sustainability projects Sydney City Council is forging ahead with a year on from the implementation of its Sustainable Sydney 2030 mantra.
“Once up and running in Town Hall, the worm farm could potentially deal with all the food waste collected there,” said a Council spokesperson.
“It will reduce the amount of City to Sydney waste to landfill, improve our ecological footprint and educate staff and other businesses about worm farms, and encourage them to install them.”
Historic Town Hall House can also look forward to a few structural add-ons, including solar panels on its roof, and a tri-generation plant to set an example of the effectiveness of using localised energy sources.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore’s vision includes achieving a 70 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030.
