Sydney is a city bewitched by faces; its own showy facade of architectural icons like the grinning Harbour Bridge and pearly Opera House, while the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW brings in a yearly glut of bodies to the gallery and portraits to the walls. In photography there is Head On, a portraiture prize that founder Moshe Rosenzveig says leans more towards, “the power of the photograph rather than the celebrity of either the sitter or photographer.” Now in its seventh year, in 2009 it received 2600 entries and with a total prize pool around the $45000 mark the numbers aren’t surprising. They are now seeking submissions for the 2010 round (deadline Mar 14) – so now’s your chance to meet your photographic ambitions head on. Go to www.headon.com.au for more information.
