A headstart on cancer research

Walkers and joggers will hit the footpaths in the name of charity on Sunday to raise money for brain cancer research.
Organised by the Cure for Life Foundation, the annual Walk4Life takes place at Centennial Park’s 2km pond course at 10 am on November 13. The targeted finish line is $200,000.
The Foundation’s chairperson Joanne Quin said more funding is necessary to continue much needed research. “Brain cancer remains the most underfunded and understudied of all cancers; funds raised from the Walk4Life will go towards research and helping to ensure the disease is manageable for future generations.”
Brain cancer has the highest impact on years of life lost when compared to 17 other malignant cancers. It is the leading cause of cancer deaths in children and males under 44 years and the second leading cause of death in females under 44 years.
“There is an absolute urgency to raise funds and find a cure,” she said.
Cure for Life offers ongoing support for vital research into the treatment of both malignant and slow-forming brain tumours.
“Walk4Life is a great way to bring our supporters together in a relaxed environment with their families and friends – to raise funds for a very important cause,” Ms Quin said.
The not-for-profit organisation was established in 2003 by reputed neurosurgeon Dr Charles Teo to help fund advancements in the research of brain cancer.
“This year we have Charlie Teo joining the gorgeous musical group the Skat Kats and playing his bagpipes for a ‘cure for life’.”
Brain Cancer Ambassador for the Cure for Life Foundation Marcella Zemanek said it is a fun and relaxed family event. “It would mean so much for people to join us in the Walk4life.”
