HOME BREW FESTIVAL

Performance, bands, film and beer all rolled into one means the Old Fitzroy has brought back the hugely successful micro-festival, Home Brew. Audiences can see bands such as Cash Savage and the Last Drinks and Sleeve Merry, and work by award-winning playwright, Caleb Lewis. I spoke with performer, Tim Spencer. “It was excellent last year. At one stage it got a bit rowdy. The band, The Brothers Grimm had mentioned how their dream came true when a girl threw her underwear onstage. Then all of a sudden women were getting completely naked.” Spencer created his performance Date Night after being inspired by the European theatre practice of concentrating on the experience of the audience. He describes his one-man show as sensual and challenging with overall intrigue. Each night he will run a selection process where he will screen women until one lucky gal will get the chance to have their own private date with him on the Fitzroy’s balcony. “I’m keen to really get to know an individual audience member. I’m exploring the idea of what it’s like to go on a first date and who’s the better judge of our character and personality, ourselves or someone we just met?”

Jun 30-Jul 2, The Old Fitzroy Theatre, 129 Dowling Street, Woolloomooloo, $35, 9697 7600, oldfitzroy.com.au
