This may well be the most famous and successful guy you’ve never heard of. Juan Luis Guerra is up there with the world’s biggest-selling Latin musicians – in the three decades of his career, record sales have hiked up a cool 30 mill or so and he has a dozen Grammys slung under his belt – and yet unlike the Justin Biebers of this world, he does so with a healthy dose of normality. So when he cruises into Sydney next week you can expect more merengues than media-storms, even though hits likes The Key of My Heart, Cuando Me Enamoro (with Enrique Iglesias),The Cost of Life and more have garnered the bachata-wielding basketballer’s son more than an avid fan following. His band the 440s are so-named for their precision (the A440 is the pitch standard) so you can expect a night of heartfelt Dominican-pop grooves, delivered sans hype. (AB)
