JUDITH LUCY: NOTHING FANCY

As its name suggests, Judith Lucy’s latest show is really nothing fancy; just stripped back, pure, unadorned stand-up. And that is what’s so brilliant about it.

For a comedienne who has been around the traps for the past 20 years there is no hint of tired cynicism. Rather at the age of 43 Lucy appears to be as much in love with her craft and her audience as she has ever been.

There are no sacred cows here. Everything is in Lucy’s firing line … even sacred cows! Lucy effortlessly traverses religion, politics, sex and the plight of singledom, making searing observations, cracking witty one liners and of course taking pot-shots at herself.

She is at home, ‘making friends’ with audience members and seamlessly involving them in her act. This is the other endearing quality about this member of Australia’s comedy elite – for someone who is so accomplished, watching her act feels like you’re sitting in her lounge room taking the piss out of each other and solving the world’s problems while getting drunk. There is a relaxed and intimate quality in her delivery that a lot of comics find hard to achieve.

At running just over an hour Lucy plays the audience beautifully leaving them on a high and wanting more. Despite it being nothing fancy, the Queen of Comedy reigns supreme and we are but her loyal subjects.

Until Mar 25, The Comedy Store, 207/122 Lang Rd, Moore Park, $25-45, 9357 1419, comedystore.com.au
