On the surface, Last Will looks like a run-of-the-mill detective movie set in the icy starkness of Stockholm. However, it delivers a far more complex crime than your average detective story.
Based on the sixth of Liza Marklund’s series of bestsellers, the film follows journalist Annika Bengtzon (Malin Crepin) after she witnesses a high-profile murder at a prestigious Nobel banquet. Bengtzon is forced to investigate the murder of the visionary Nobel board member under the guise of writing a gossip piece, while her tabloid paper goes for a sensationalist terrorism angle. It was a treat to watch her grapple with bioethics, assassins, and trying to make it work with her husband. Last Will is a smart thriller not just for fans of detective novels. ***1/2
