Marmalade Bar

The Rose Hotel has a new tenant in the attic, and she likes marmalade. The dilapidated upstairs balcony has been renovated and filled with chesterfield lounges, typewriters and vintage chandeliers, making it part museum, part 18th century smoking room… without the smoke. The cocktail list is inspired by Grandma (in a good way) with more citrus and sweetness than a jam factory. White Wine Sangria ($20) is bold like punch, and is best enjoyed with a Cheese Platter ($16) – in this case a trio of seasonal cheeses with walnut bread. The bar menu remains the same as The Rose’s, but I hope Marmalade finds her feet and creates her own menu in time (high tea would go down a treat). The Rose Martini ($16) is girlishly good but needed garnish to match its inner beauty. I adored the Bitter Hand ($16), with marmalade and blood orange, vodka, Cointreau and a flamed orange rind. I’ll be back for the To Name ($16), a raspberry-inspired gin martini. The name, or lack thereof, is “a mistake with the printers that stuck.” It reminds me of my grandma’s attempts at texting – off kilter, but with the best of intentions – and that’s the essence of this bar.
