More than archetypal architecture

Sydney City’s Paddington Reservoir Gardens restoration project has been awarded an Australian Institute of Landscape Architects 2010 Medal for Landscape Architecture. The project was recognised for “achieving a unique blend of historic ruin and contemporary urban design”. The awards recognise excellence in landscape and urban design, planning, land management, and research and communication.

He does whatever a spider can… for the environment

‘French Spiderman’ 48-year-old Alain Robert climbed from level 14 to the top of the 57-storey Lumiere Building on Bathurst Street on Monday morning. He took 20 minutes to finish the climb, without safety equipment. Police charged him with risking the safety of another. In 2003 he was arrested  for scaling the Harbour Bridge, and last year he was charged for climbing another Sydney building. He has climbed 80 buildings around the world to raise awareness of climate change.

Council tries to stop cockatoo cull

City of Sydney Council has demanded the National Parks and Wildlife Service withdraw its permit to cull 20 cockatoos in the CBD. The birds are charged with damaging Broadway’s heritage Sydney Campus Apartments. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said she opposed the lack of community consultation and that the City would ask the NPWS to either investigate alternatives for the birds’ relocation or the building’s protection.
