October Eats

In a month brimming with dining offers, here are my picks:

Marble Bar
Tonight, Thursday 29th September, you can join me at Marble Bar to help them celebrate 118 years of serving up fine wines and classic cocktails! The statuesque space was built in 1893, making it older than the Queen Victoria Building (1898)! Famous drinkers have included Liza Minnelli, Mischa Barton, Ewan McGregor and well… me!

Malaysian Kitchen
Sydney’s best Malaysian restaurants pop up all town – Concord, Thornleigh, Campsie and Epping spring to mind. Save on petrol this Saturday 1st October by trying them all in once place -  BBQ Madness at Parramatta Mall. From 9am-2pm you’ll find cheap and cheerful Malaysian food alongside entertainment and celebrity cooking demonstrations. However if you don’t have time to get to Parramatta, try wrapping some seafood in banana leaves for your next home BBQ to give it a moist, Malaysian edge!

Gazebo Wine Garden
Also on this Labour Day Long Weekend (Monday 3rd October), Gazebo Wine Garden will be hosting the Lizzie Bay Dog Show! Join the crème de la crème of Sydney’s fine furry friends and their sexy companions for a fun afternoon frolic. While your pampered pet will be treated to delights from Paws Point, you can enjoy the recently revamped wine menu and every drink you sink will also send a buck to the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home.

Saké
You’ll have to be quick to score a seat in Saké’s beautiful Bonsai Private Dining Room for their next Sake Discovery Session on Wednesday 5th October at 7pm. Executive Chef Shaun Presland has teamed up with sake sommelier Miriam McLachlan to offer three tasting spoons with three premium sakes. It’s the perfect educational pre-dinner tasting adventure at $40/head.

Ocean Room
Remember Ned Goodwin, Japan’s first Master of Wine? He’s personable and rather dishy; and he’ll be popping back into Ocean Room to take the mystery out of Argentinean wine. On the 11th and 12th October he’ll be matching them to six courses of Raita Noda’s rather spectacular modern Japanese cuisine for just $120/head.

Bitton Gourmet
David Bitton’s also doing a well-priced dinner ($75/head) on Tuesday 11th October, inspired by our bros across the ditch. David’s interpretation of traditional New Zealand dishes includes a Vacherin of Hokey Pokey Ice Cream with Kiwifruit Jam and can be matched with Craggy Range wines for an additional $30/head. He’s paying for his inspiration by donating $10 per guest to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

Tommy’s Beer Café
Finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention that October is also Oktoberfest! If you’d like some stein-clinking action, my current Germanic hot-spot is Tommy’s Beer Café in Glebe. Owner Tomas Bartovic tells me he’ll have Hofbrau Munchen on tap all month, with an array of German dinner specials, including Goulash Soup with Diced Beef, Potato and Frankfurter Sausage and Mini German Hot Dos with Nurnberger Sausage, Sauerkraut and Sweet Mustard. It’s wallet friendly too!
