Lewis Carroll’s tale of Alice’s trip down the rabbit hole may be a timeless classic, but that’s no reason not to have a little fun with it. Enter Project: ALICE, a mash up of 21st Century culture put together by an impressive collection of Sydney’s creative catalysts. Peek through this looking glass and you’ll discover an explosion of youth art and culture, from hip-hop and spoken word to wild beats, technological wizardry and haute couture.
Using the energy, boredom and inventiveness of Generation Y as its inspiration, Project: ALICE rips apart Carroll’s psychedelic fairy tale and completely reinvents it, creating a bombastic theatrical event unlike anything else. Rejecting traditional forms and practice, it carves new territory in a bid to engage and stimulate a demographic renowned for its disengagement and over-stimulation. It’s quite a feat, but if anyone can do it these guys can.
According to director Mark Haslam says, Project: ALICE is geared towards a modern audience who wants more than a two dimensional yarn. “We’re focussed on engaging all the senses in the way a rock concert, or dance party does,” he says “but at the same time we’re asking questions and exploring important themes.”
Get ready for one seriously whacked tea party.
