PHOTOGRAPHY & PLACE FILM SERIES

I remember exactly how I felt after watching Australian outback thriller Wake in Fright (1971) starring Donald Pleasence and Gary Bond when it was restored and re-released in cinemas two years ago. I felt every bit of the sweat, dirt, beer breath, hangover, heat and claustrophobia even after I’d left the Chauvel cinema. How aptly it fits into the NSW Art Gallery’s latest film series based on the exhibition Photography & Place – a journey of discovery through the Australian landscape. Remaining films in the series include Peter Weir’s The Cars That Ate Paris (1975), Roadgames (1981) of the Ozploitation genre starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Broken Highway (1993) that has been compared to Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumblefish amongst others. This is no place for Skippy or Crocodile Dundee, these are films that speak undesirable truths through harsh landscapes and  illustrate contradictions in idealised small country towns. Another great and most importantly, free line-up by the gallery. (KS)
