Self confessed as ‘more open and spacious’ than their debut, Summertime Heavy is the second album from Perth-based trio Sugar Army. Their first single Hooks For Hands is built on a deft bassline, layered by a vibrating guitar, clear unwavering vocals from Patrick Mclaughlin, and Jamie Sher’s tight kit rhythms. Before too long the things kick into gear and the song moves forward with a driving energy. Each track presents up a subtly different mood, but always bears a thick, rock texture and similar forward momentum to Hooks For Hands. Title track Summertime Heavy offers a gentle break from this sound world with distant vocals on an acoustic guitar canvas. If you love Queens of the Stone Age or Kings of Leon, you’ll like this.
