The debut album from transcontinental threesome The Acid (Australian artist Ry X, British DJ Adam Freeland, and US producer Steve Nalepa) is, like its title suggests, a boundary-breaking song cycle with a transient, ambiguous feel.

Equal parts low-fi indie and cutting edge electronica, this ethereal album is both stirring and chilled. The soundscape is instantly appealing while repeated listens bring new rewards with crackling vinyl, chirping crickets, and even clacking bicycle spokes becoming apparent.

It would be easy to dismiss this as hipster music but the craftsmanship and talent here puts Liminal above glib categorisation and ensures its place as one of the year’s notable releases. (PH)
