THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

Opera Australia has lined up three of the most popular operas in the traditional canon for their summer season. First Madama Butterfly, then Carmen and last and certainly not least: The Barber of Seville. Starting with the rousing overture through to the cartoon-like set and spectacular operatic performances, this production will not disappoint. “Figaro, Figaro, Figaro,” is performed by the handsome Girogio Caoduro, whose comedic performance is matched by a stunning vocal range. Count Almaviva is performed by Henry Chou, whose voice is rich, though the singer perhaps lacks the sex appeal one might expect to attract Rosina’s (Dominica Matthews) attentions. Set in the roaring 20s the production cleverly uses the conceit of vaudeville and the Barber Shop Quartet to reinvent the most famous of all singing barbers in a slapstick and highly entertaining night at the opera.

Until Mar 29, Sydney Opera House, $95-297, 9318 8200, opera-australia.org.au
