THE BOYS

The Boys, by Gordon Graham, is a dramatic classic which looks at macho culture in Australian society.

“It’s a play about the older brother coming home from prison and the repercussions of that on his family,” says Johnny Carr who plays Glenn, one of the three Sprague brothers.

Brett Sprague, who has returned from jail, is reunited with his family, but as his disruptive side flares up, the family is forced to deal with the consequences. The play is set in the family home and follows two different time lines, that of the men and that of the women.

“It’s really exploring masculinity – man versus woman dynamics – and to a certain degree, reclaiming your masculinity,” says Carr.

Originally produced in 1991, this play is a remake of the original – although many will remember its AFI Award-winning turn as a feature film directed by Rowan Wood and starring the electrifying David Wenham.

“It’s a very relevant story. The issues of power and control, mob mentality, and family pecking order are all relevant today,” continues Carr.

Starring Carr, Cheree Cassidy, Josh McConville, Jeanette Cronin, Anthony Gee, Louisa Mignone, and Eryn-Jean Norvill, this dark and powerful play will no doubt affect audiences of all ages.
