If you went on appearances alone, you might be forgiven for feeling a little squeamish about CuBBYHOuSE. “Excessive use of typography”; “worrying effusions of ‘childish abandon’ and ‘tributes to the imagination’”; and last but not least, “musical theatre”. But two seconds into this fantastical fable of friendship and you’re won over. “That was just my ‘Negative Voice’ speaking,” you think. After all, how cool is typography when dramatically spelt out by Ado using his hands alone? If I have to childishly abandon myself to imagination to follow Holly and Ado on their leaps from grungy Berlin to palm-swaying Majorca, with some detours past liposuctioned LA and the highways of Australia, then who cares! Childish I will be. And musical theatre presents barely a hump in the road when skilfully navigated by these two; professionally trained by clowns; darlings of the prestigious Public Theater in NY; and real musicians to boot. CuBBYHOuSE – you can come to play anytime.
