THEATRE: RICHARD 3

Richard 3 is one of Shakespeare’s longest plays, second only to Hamlet, and is filled with complex and indirect references to his other historical works. It will be an interesting challenge for Kate Gaul, who has by now solidified her reputation as one of Australia’s most uniquely creative directors. Gaul’s talent lies in her ability to draw out the essence of a script, while injecting it with new energy and meaning – Gaul is a master of reinvigoration.
At the centre of Richard 3 is the development of its central character and Gaul remains true to this end. “The play becomes a deep existential meditation into Richard’s soul,” Gaul says. “His incessant desire for power, via the most bloody and inhumane means, frighten and allure us equally.” Gaul seeks to lure out the ghosts and shadows who haunt this unloved man, and parade them before us, while at the same time exposing the depths of Richard’s villainy.
Siren Theatre Company, Gaul’s collaborative enterprise, received widespread praise for its version of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night last year. We can only wait and see what this year will bring. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long.
