It’s the dirty red heart of Australia’s iron ore mining boom, to which thousands of dreamers rush every year on a vision of excitement and easy money: the future in ochre-tinted glasses. The Pilbara Region in WA is also the setting of acclaimed writer Sue Smith (Brides of Christ, The Leaving of Liverpool)’s new play, Strange Attractor, developed as part of the Griffin Playwright’s Residency program. In the ravaged aftermath of a cyclone on a far-flung railway construction site at the edge of the earth, five employees decamp to a mess hall to swap battle stories, awaiting the arrival of an investigator from the head office in Perth. This character-driven excavation of small-team politics in the distant land that underpins our economy is sure to extract a fair few Eurekas from the crowd.
