The popularity of roller derby has exploded in recent years, filling a void in sports for many women, where competitiveness, aggression and skill is mixed with acceptance, entertainment and a chance to express creativity and personality. Director Daniel Hayward captures this essence in This is Roller Derby, following leagues in Victoria and Adelaide, as well as the fortunes of the spiritual home of modern Roller Derby – Austin, Texas. Central to the film is a dedicated group of women in Ballarat, Victoria, struggling to create a league from scratch with little in the way of resources or experience. You don’t have to be a hardcore fan to appreciate the heartache overcome by some, and the grit and determination displayed by all. (CC) ***
