Tiger Mottle *UPDATED*

Sydney’s full of steaks – these days you can get ‘em for five bucks!  So it’s not surprising to see one on the menu of this great little café-by-day, now doing dinner by Wednesday-to-Friday night. What is surprising is how good the generous, well-cooked serve of Eye Fillet with Garlic Mash and Red Wine Jus ($21) actually was! The small menu takes café style food and makes it night-worthy. There’s no wine list, but you’re encouraged to bring wine with a low $2/person corkage. Entrees are simple and reasonably priced. The Prawn Satay Skewers with Vietnamese Salad ($9.50) caught my attention with beautifully cooked succulent and slightly translucent prawns. Golden triangles of Grilled Haloumi ($9.50) nestled amongst house-made preserved lemon and rocket also hits the spot. For a complete, balanced main, try the Rustic Pork Pie ($17.50) topped with sliced apple and stewed pear, and ringed by sautéed cabbage on apple and onion jus. End with a classic dessert – an Apple and Rhubarb Crumble ($8.50) – and a double ristretto of the excellent Golden Cobra Coffee set against maple syrup, chilli and cream in a mouth-tingling Maple Mottle ($3). The late sixties/early seventies Jamaican dub makes a pleasant change from the ubiquitous Gotan Project restaurant tune domination!
