Two visits in one week! If that makes me a glutton, so be it – just pass me another Potato Pancake ($8.50)! They’re really good here – especially wrapped around chicken sautéed with capsicum, shallots and mushrooms then topped with cheese in the Shepherd’s Bag ($23.50). Whoever made a Buffalo Cheek ($11.90) into a bar snack deserves a medal! It’s excellent, robust drinking food, made achingly tender by a chef who knows what they’re doing. The Mixed Platter ($28.90) eats like a textbook of protein management – including well-crumbed veal schnitzel, nicely rendered duck, and melt-in-the-mouth pork belly. As the name suggests, your meal here is as much about beverages as it is food. Charming Czech staff will guide your liquid adventure, starting with the original (we’re talking 1842) Czech Pilsner Urquell ($6.30/sm). If it’s icy, Gluhwein ($8.50) is available in both colours, scrubbing up best in red. Those chasing the hard stuff should head for the (73%) Koruna Absinth ($12.50). It’s mighty smooth but still better with a Crystal Lager ($6.90) chaser (an infinitely drinkable combo of lager and German gold sparkling). By now you’re clutching an overfull belly and buzzed enough to think the Salvador Dali clock is melting down the wall. Czechs use Becherovka ($6.50) to ease indigestion – just sayin’.
