Unvaulting Town Hall

A lock of Napoleon’s hair and a chair from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II will be put on display as part of a free exhibit at Town Hall over the school holidays.
The Unvaulted exhibition will allow the public to view some of the 3500 historically significant items given to Sydney Town Hall over the past 120 years.
“There are some 3,500 invaluable items in our unique Sydney Town Hall Collection which is the largest civic collection in Australia,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
“We look forward to sharing this eclectic mix of official gifts and some of the fascinating stories behind them. This Collection demonstrates the City’s rich 160-year history and some of these items have been kept in vaults for over a century.”
Other objects include fragments of headstones uncovered from previous
archaeological excavations of Sydney Town Hall, a lamp from one of the Japanese submarines which attacked Sydney Harbour in 1942 and a medallion presented to a sailor on HMAS Sydney nine months before the ship went down.
Unvaulted will be the inaugural exhibition in the newly refurbished Lower Town Hall, designed to highlight the Sydney’s newest multifunctional exhibition venue within Town Hall.
Unvaulted will be on display in Sydney Town Hall (entry via Druitt Street), from 10am – 4pm until Monday 26th April 2010.
