WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES

Walk a Mile in My Shoes will see The Barefoot Divas, a group of six Indigenous singers from Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, take the stage for an evening of music, poetry and the spoken word.

Each Diva, hugely accomplished in their own field, brings with them an eclectic musical, linguistic and cultural background. Jazz, blues, Maori, reggae, gospel, and soul will infuse songs often carried in different tongues.

Throughout, the Divas will be supported by a six-piece band – itself a mélange of nationalities with members from Greek, Sicilian, Peruvian and Maori origins.

Around the flow of music poetry and spoken word will swirl.

Vicki Gordon, the show’s director and producer, says that the audience will journey into the performers’ lives. The difficulties of the contemporary music industry will be exposed, with attention trained on its relationship with motherhood and womanhood. As well, she wants the show to resolve, if partially, the, “glaring omission” of Indigenous voices from mainstream music.

Gordon hopes that the performance will fulfill an audience’s desire for something authentic, leaving them enthralled.

Jan 8-11, CarriageWorks, 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh, $30, and Jan 14, Parramatta Opening Party, free, check the website closer to the date for performance details, 1300 668 812, sydneyfestival.org.au
