Convincing your crew of plain eaters to pop down to the Capitol Theatre for a show just got a little easier, with the neighbouring hotel undergoing a tidy up and refit. Their resulting modern Australian brasserie however, may take a little adjusting to… It’s situated under the neon pink lights and sounds of Japanese photo land. Getting smashed helps – the Basil Smash ($14) is improved tableside by shredding the garnish into the drink; while an Apple Smash ($14) is turned tantalisingly toffee apple by Licor 43. Before you start thinking it’s all James Squire beers and mega-steaks like the 400g Angus Ribeye on the Bone ($36), which incidentally wins me over with house-made Smoked BBQ Sauce ($2); try the whizz-bang Wagyu Bresaola Salad ($19.50). It’s beautifully balanced with shaved pecorino cheese, sweetly caramelised pear and perky leaves. It easily outclasses the Chicken Liver and Brandy Parfait ($14) dished up with plentiful sourdough toast. ‘Skewers’ doesn’t do the heavily laden Yardhouse branded swords justice – tender Moroccan Lamb Rump ($32) scrubbed up very nicely indeed, with plentiful cous cous, harissa and chickpea salad. Let their wet wine glass ring logo remind you to consume it with a rich red, like Cape Barren Native Goose GSM ($8/glass, $38/bottle), but do watch for Light Rail trams when you alight…
