YOUTH LAGOON – THE YEAR OF HIBERNATION

Sometimes labelling yourself “indie” shouldn’t mean that you sound disinterested and the production value is poor. With today’s technology anyone can produce a high quality, high end  sound without being like overproduced pop. There’s nothing more bland than a production discussion but it’s unavoidable. This is clearly intentional. Sure in digital photography certain treatments are subjected upon the image, but not to the point to compromise the original theme or idea. Youth Lagoon have definitely overdone under doing it. The Year of Hibernation is the the Idaho based Trevor Powers monikered Youth Lagoon’s debut. Swirling guitar sounds and vocals that sound like they were recorded by a bored ghost about 3 doors down would be the main features. If you strain your ears and brain you can get the gist of what the energy and ideas were intended to be in the inception of it’s writing. Unfortunately this album is veiled. It’d be like a magnificent sculpture but then covering it in a dozen sheets of flyscreen over it. It could be that it’s genius but how could you tell?
